CHANGE OF LEADERSHIP FOR COTA SA

COTA SA President Emeritus Professor Anne Edwards AO last week announced that Chief Executive Jane Mussared is leaving the organisation after seven years of outstanding service. Jane has resigned to head to Canberra, where she is taking up another age related role on 2 September.

“The Board is grateful for the contribution of Jane Mussared. She has brought enormous energy, passionate commitment, highly-developed leadership skills, and personal integrity to her work with COTA SA, which we all greatly appreciate and have earned COTA SA widespread recognition and respect. One of her lasting legacies has been to build an outstanding staff and volunteer team in SA. Everyone at COTA SA is enormously proud that Jane will now have the chance to positively influence ageing policy at a national level.

“COTA SA has been the advocate and voice for and with older South Australians since 1957. Its strength lies in its statewide engagement, independence, and deep reserves of people power drawn from our staff, volunteers, and community.

“In a period of continuing challenges for all Australians as they age and the critical need for action to identify and overcome inequalities and policy challenges, COTA SA has transformed itself under the leadership of Jane Mussared as our Chief Executive. COTA SA has built a strong reputation for its strategic and principled stance on all issues affecting older South Australians and is well-placed to face the next phase of its life.”

Jane Mussared, Chief Executive since the beginning of 2015, said that her term has been enormously satisfying.

“Our focus in my time at the helm has been to modernise COTA SA. In 2022 COTA SA reflects the diversity of older South Australia, it has challenged our community to be contemporary in its understanding of modern ageing, and it has the internal systems and capabilities that make it strong and viable.

“COTA SA must always keep an eye on those things that cause real disadvantage and distress as we age. I have no doubt that COTA SA will continue to speak out about housing, cost of living, ageism, regional disadvantage, climate change, and the double jeopardy of age and gender.

“There remains much to be done. I am looking forward to watching a new CE lead the next stage in the life of this vibrant and enduring organisation.”

Anne Edwards continued, “We are very confident in our team continuing the great work of COTA SA.”

General Manager Miranda Starke will step into the Acting CE role while COTA SA undertakes a search for the next Chief Executive.

FLEURIEU NEIGHBOURHOOD NETWORK – BOOK CLUB!

Fleurieu Neighbourhood Network is launching a book club with titles chosen to include large print, eprint, eAudio, and CD. It is hoped that by choosing books with multiple formats more people will be able to enjoy the books, discussions and social activities.

“Sing you home” by Jodi Picoult is quite a challenging choice for FNN’s first book. Released in 2011, it follows the story of a bisexual woman fighting for the right to use frozen embryos created by her and her ex-husband.  Four books a year will have a foodie theme and a corresponding lunch or dinner. People are welcome to suggest future titles so long as they are available in multiple formats.

FNN Book club will be held on the first Thursday afternoon of the month in Goolwa and third Thursday morning in Victor Harbor starting in October. Venue to be confirmed. Times will be subject to change depending on requests of members. For more information or register your interest, please email jmitchell@cotasa.org.au

AMAZING STRENGTH FOR LIFE FOR AN AMAZING MULTICULTURAL COMMUNITY!

COTA SA was delighted to meet a community group at Amazing Northern Multicultural Services (ANMS), a social welfare organisation of Amazing Grace Gospel Church which provides support to New & Emerging Communities in the northern suburbs of Adelaide. We were welcomed by community members from Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda and, with the help of a Swahili speaking interpreter, we presented the Strength for Life Program to the group. One of our Strength for Life Instructors, Zambian born Nyiika Msapenda, came along to meet the community and shared some gentle warm up exercises with the group; it was a delightful morning!

Feedback from one participant following the session: ‘This is so important for us. I feel so alive!’

Many thanks to Muhama Yotham, Nyiika Msapenda and all at Amazing Northern Multicultural Services for an excellent introduction to Strength for Life for this community.   We look forward to continuing to work to make Strength for Life accessible to our diverse community.

Welcome to our 14 new Strength for Life Instructors who graduated from training last weekend! Their passion for sharing Strength for Life with older South Australians is inspiring.

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE AGED 50+ IN NSW?

If so, we want to speak with them!

The Plug-in is undertaking research to transform retirement living and aged care. We are working with a provider in NSW who has new and exciting plans which they hope will be a model for the future of community living and care.

We are looking for people who want to provide feedback on this new approach to community living and care. This will be an opportunity for you to share your ideas and experience on how you would like to live as you get older. As with all our projects, we have some specific people who we wish to hear from to chat about:

·  Retirement living: Those interested in retirement living in the future, and either living in the South Coast area of NSW or who would consider moving there

·  Aged care design: People in NSW who have experience with a loved one in aged care OR who think that they may need aged care in future

If you know of family, friends or others in NSW who would be interested in contributing to this project and the work of The Plug-in, please share this information with them or contact The Plug-in team on 8224 5526 or email: connect@theplugin.com.au

FATAL FIVE - DISTRACTION

Distractions can be an unavoidable daily occurrence. This could be a phone call causing you to forget you just made a cup of tea or forgetting where you put your keys. Luckily, these kinds of distractions only come with minor consequences; however, this is not the case when driving a motor vehicle. Between 2016 and 2020 distraction was the cause of more than 44 per cent of all lives lost on South Australian roads.

Distractions come in many forms. These include mobile phones, car stereos, GPS, eating and drinking, smoking, talking to others in the vehicle, fatigue and many more. Driving is a complex task that requires coordination and the use or wide range of skills. For this reason, it is vitally important that we limit distractions whenever we can.

Here are some tips to help minimise distractions:

  • plan your trip before you get into the vehicle (What route are you going to take? How busy will the roads be?
  • put all electronic devices on silent or do not disturb
  • ensure you are well-rested and feel okay to drive
  • ensure there are no loose items in your car that can move around while driving.

If you feel yourself becoming distracted, pull over in a safe location and manage the distraction before continuing.

Every little decision you make can go a long way to ensure your journey is safe and trouble free.

MAKING MUSIC HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER

A new approach cuts out the confusing aspects to get you straight into playing an instrument. Imagine someone dusting off that uke or guitar they got as a present and asking if you could help the kids with a current hit song you’ve never even heard. You say “Hum a few bars .. Oh, that’s easy .. “ and off you go! You play by ear, just as Elvis did in every movie. You show them the one-finger chords and patterns common to most songs. It’s that ancient secret that your neighbour kid learned in the garage band after school. COTA SA has been offered free access to courses based around ‘story telling’, such as music making, writing & publishing memoirs, and digital presentations such as movies. Expressions of interest are especially welcomed from those in a position to organize group activities. Resources are affordable or free. These days your mobile phone or laptop can become a Hollywood studio!

Send expressions of interest to drtombenjamin@gmail.com.
