Strength for Life reaches out to the Bosnian Community

It was wonderful to attend the Pine Lakes Centre in the City of Salisbury where COTA SA's Strength for Life Program was presented to 14 members of the Bosnian community. The presentation was received with great enthusiasm and interest, with most of the community members eager to take part in this wonderful program.

We look forward to continuing to work together as we explore the best ways for the Bosnian community at Pine Lakes to participate in Strength for Life. Many thanks to Mary Ceravolo, CALD Program Coordinator, and to the community members themselves for their warm welcome.

Attention men! Tell us how you would like to receive urgent medical care in the future.

In partnership with Flinders University, The Plug-in is looking to understand how people aged 65+ would prefer to receive urgent medical care and your perspectives on how urgent health services could be improved.

We are currently seeking more male participants to share their perspectives and experiences — good or bad — on this topic.

No previous direct health or medical experience is required to participate in this research, just a desire to help shape what urgent health services may look like in the future. We want to hear from you!

Share this with others who may be interested in contributing to this project — The Plug-in wants to hear the voices of a broad range of older South Australians.

COTA SA Climate Change Group leading conversations with ASX listed companies

Many of us are very concerned about climate change and the impact on the quality of life of our children and grandchildren — a view expressed by more than 80% of older South Australians in a COTA SA survey.

The COTA SA Climate Change group has been liaising directly with Adelaide-based companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange about their plans to reduce carbon emissions, as many COTA members either directly or indirectly (through superannuation) own shares in those companies.

Read about the outcomes of these conversations here.

Fleurieu Neighbourhood Network

Intergenerational dinosaur experience a hit!

The Fleurieu Neighbouhood Network recently hosted a booked out intergenerational dinosaur session at Victor Harbor Library — and it was a hit!

Grandparents and children alike stomped like a tyrannosaurus, made pasta skeletons and hatched baby dinosaurs. The sessions finished with stories read by Fleurieu Neighbourhood Network committee member Jenny Cherry and manager Jill Mitchell.

We were all delighted by the response of one participant who wants to know whose idea this great event was…  the Fleurieu Neighbourhood Network of course!

Stay safe online

Whether by choice or necessity we are all spending more of our time online; ensuring that we’re using the internet safely can make life easier — both online and offline.

Today is Safer Internet Day, a global event that brings together communities, families, schools and organisations to help create safer online spaces. This year Australians are being called on to Connect. Reflect. Protect

Connect safely and with purpose — by keeping apps and devices secure and using social media in positive ways.

Reflect before we act — by taking a moment to consider how what we do and say online may affect others.

Protect ourselves and others by taking action — by telling family, friends or colleagues about eSafety and how we can help.

By doing these simple things, we can work towards making every day a Safer Internet Day.

Fringe shows tackling ageing and ageism

The 2023 Fringe is almost here! Why not explore ageing and ageism in these two stage shows.

Aware

Age is not a problem, ageism is…. How do you think, feel, and act towards an older person?

65% of Australians have experienced ageism within the last five years. Have you? Does age matter when we think, feel or act towards others? Can we do something about it?

Vintage Creative Therapies, supported by Office for Ageing Well, want to change that!

They take up the challenge of raising awareness of ageism and giving voice to older people this visual show where the artistic vision of real-life experiences and situations, shown with a bit of humour will change the way people think, feel and act. Let's amplify the voice of older people! Bring your family and friends — let all generations see what ageism is and how we can challenge it.
