SA's Week of Ageing Well

It's South Australia's Week of Ageing Well; beginning on 1 October every year, this week is a celebration of living and ageing well. COTA SA was proud yesterday both to celebrate the UN International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) on 1 October, and to kick off the Week of Ageing Well with our free, flagship, intergenerational event. 

This October, take some time to reflect and discover the meaning of ageing well and why not take Office for Ageing Well's short Week of Ageing Well survey to share what ageing well means to you and contribute to the statewide understanding of ageing well.
     

COTA SA Conversations with Salisbury Seniors

You're invited! Celebrate Active Ageing and join us this October for our next conversation with Salisbury Seniors on the topic, Eat Well, Age WellCome along for a fresh look at eating well on a budget, preparing tasty meals, and discovering easy ways to access nutritious food in your community. If you're in the area we hope to see you there.

Better Balance Training

Calling all instructors! Our latest Better Balance training was postponed due to venue availability. We plan to run another Better Balance training before the end of the year - we're inviting expressions of interest, please call us on 08 8232 0422 or email sfl@cotasa.org.au to let us know if you'd like to attend the next course.

Listening to you on the Yorke Peninsula

COTA SA’s Policy and Engagement team loves getting out and about and meeting older South Australians. 

This week we were pleased to head to the Yorke Peninsula to spend a blustery day at the Yorke Peninsula Field Day. Thank you to those who stopped by to say hello and share your experience of ageing on the Yorke Peninsula. Our Climate Change Group members share stories and information that they find useful with the hope that you'll find it useful too! In this edition, helping the environment and avoiding the high cost of electricity by finding out where you can go when it's too hot (or too cold) in your home.

The New Aged Care Reforms Explained

   
Big changes are coming to aged care in Australia from 1 November. Join COTA Australia and the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) for free community information sessions to: 
  • Learn what the reforms mean for you
  • Get your questions answered 
The session in Adelaide will be held next Wednesday 8 October at Skyline North and West - Rydges Adelaide; alternatively you can join the remaining sessions live online or watch one of the sessions which have already been held.

     

Member exclusive: Ongoing learning opportunities

COTA SA is delighted to be partnering with WEA Adult Learning and Skills SA to provide our members with funded additional learning opportunities through WEA’s program of short courses. As well as developing new skills, lifelong learning can contribute to ageing well with benefits including promoting brain health, staying active and engaged and making new social connections. If you’ve been considering taking a course at WEA this could be the opportunity for you to take a fully subsidised course.

A monthly lunch for members of the LGBTI+ community over 50. You can now book directly with Rainbow Hub SA for their monthly lunches.

Rainbow Hub SA GiveOUT Day campaign

Rainbow Hub SA is seeking donations through their GiveOUT Day campaign towards an increased reach into regional SA so that older LGBTI+ people living outside metropolitan Adelaide are better supported.

This October, BreastScreen SA is reminding women across South Australia to make time for their own health during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 

Women are often the planners, carers and organisers - booking everything from the vet to brunch dates, hair appointments to family check-ups. But when it comes to their own health, a breast screen can easily slip to the bottom of the list. You’ve booked everything else… now book your free breast screen. It only takes 15 minutes and there are 8 fixed clinics across metropolitan Adelaide as well as mobile units finishing off the year with visits to various places.
     

Get online week

20 - 26 October is Get Online week, a national campaign to close the digital divide. It supports people to feel safer and more confident online so no one is left behind. 

Between 20-26 October, hundreds of fun, local digital skills events are being held in communities across Australia for Get Online Week. Including Norwood Payneham & St Peters who have 4 events on offer at NPSP libraries: Instagram for Beginners, Facebook & Instagram for Small Business, Craft, Chat and Apps Morning Tea, and iCloud Basics.
