Younger people and older people: words of wisdom
| |
| |
At our 2024 International Day of Older Persons celebration we invited our attendees to share their insights on what younger people and older people can learn from each other and what they wish younger people knew about getting older...
Today we're pleased to bring you just some of their words of wisdom shared by participants both on-screen and by answering the question on our postcards which were on the tables at the event.

COTA SA 2024 Annual General Meeting
| |
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM). The AGM included our guest speaker, The Right Honourable, the Lord Mayor Dr Jane Lomax-Smith AM who shared various plans that are in motion to ensure that the City of Adelaide is hospitable and accessible now and in the future. She also shared that:
"The demographics of our city don't do justice to the fact it is the best place to live if you are mature... if you want a short walk to the shops, want to be able to get to the cinema, theatre, doctors, the hospital, radiology clinics, everything within easy walking distance, this is the best place to live in the world."

Following being diagnosed with Parkinson disease, Karel increased her regular gym sessions from two to six a week and attends Strength for Life along with a variety of other sessions at Blackwood Community Recreation Centre. A physio who specialises in Parkinsons gave Karel specific strengthening exercises which, with the assistance of the trainers, she does during her Strength for Life classes at the gym. She has also found boxercise particularly beneficial. Karel shared her story with us earlier this year - click below to read it.

Project outcomes: Older women victim-survivors
| |
CONTENT WARNING: Before reading any further please be aware this article mentions Family Domestic and Sexual Violence. If this article does raise any issues for you, please check out our page of services and supports.
The Plug-in was delighted to partner with Office for Women to undertake a project to better understand the unique experience of older women who experience Family Domestic & Sexual Violence (FDSV) in the South Australian context. This project enabled an in-depth exploration with service providers, community members and lived experience advocates to explore the complexity of this important issue impacting older women.
This project included the development of resources - a series of posters aimed at raising awareness among older women and the broader community; the posters direct people to information about support services on COTA SA’s Older Women's Services and Supports webpage.
As the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence has commenced earlier this week, we are excited to announce we have launched a bus shelter campaign to coincide with this important time. Our bus campaigns are just one more platform for distributing the resource.
We are thankful to everyone who took part in this important project.

Survey: Ageing in South Australia and the Aged Care System
If you are receiving or supporting someone with aged care or are an aged care provider, the research team at University South Australia want to hear from you!
The team at University of South Australia is conducting a study to explore the level of trust older people and carers have in the aged care system to help uncover ways to assist in improving the experiences of older people within the aged care system. There are three surveys – an Older Person’s survey, a survey for Carers and a survey for Aged Care Providers. Help improve the system by taking a few minutes to participate.

In a first for South Australia, COTA SA supporter Centennial Park has introduced a sustainable living memorial for families to commemorate their loved ones. Partnering with Living Legacy, Centennial Park will exclusively offer the unique living memorial option as part of its Environmental Sustainability Plan launched this year, which includes diversifying and adapting to the increasing demand for sustainable and less emission intensive end-of-life choices.
Living Legacy’s ground-breaking science allows your loved one’s ashes to positively impact the environment. Creating a beautiful, lasting tribute where friends and family can gather and reflect, whilst contributing to the beautiful botanical environment. Commemorating a loved one through the Living Legacy Forever Flower Garden involves a reflective ceremony, personalised plaque and the option to retain some of the ashes inside a crystal keepsake.
There is an open garden this Saturday, 30 November between 10am and 12 noon. Head along to see the garden and ask the team any questions.
